Art and The White City – Awesome Museums and Galleries Exhibitions in TLV

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls” – said Publo Picasso, and he was right. This is why I decided to dedicate a post to my favorite art spaces in Tel Aviv, where I can always ease my mind and soul. Enjoy my selection of museums and galleries, and wipe off the “dust” of your soul at one of the amazing exhibitions of the White City.

Tel Aviv Museum of Art

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is without any doubt one of the greatest museums of the world, when it comes to modern art. The impressive architectural phenomenon has a great collection of works by both Israeli and leading international artists. Originally established in 1932, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art holds an incredible collection of contemporary art, alongside classics.

Fun fact: until 1971 the museum was housed in the onetime private residence of Meir Dizengoff, Tel Aviv’s first Mayor.

My pick: Sharon Ya’ari – Leap Towards Yourself

Sharon Ya’ari has describes a melancholy state of tension between the ideal and the real. While everything decays and time, wind and floods sweep away what has been and what might have been, we have to hold our head above the water. In Ya’ari’s most recent photographs, representing a kind of archaeology of being, the viewers seem to participate in a constant transformation of space and time. Closing: 26 April, 2014

Herta and Paul Amir Building

The new wing of Tel Aviv Museum of Art is designed by architecture Preston Scott Cohen, who’s famous architectural space is simultaneously linear and multi-layered.

The building’s exterior envelope, an extended “folding” surface that breaks at disparate-angled modules, is a dynamic ornament made of 430 polished cement panels manufactured on location.

My pick: Joana Vasconcelos – Lusitana

Joana is one of Portugal’s leading artists and was the country’s representative at La Biennale di Venezia 2013. Her work engages in an investigation of gender, class and national identities through the media of sculpture, installations, assemblages, video and photography, all the while remonstrating against the routine of everyday life. Closing: 26 April, 2014

My pick: Merav Stark – Friday Night Dinner

Merav Stark documented her family’s traditional Friday night dinner over a two-year period. For the past 30 years some twenty people convene regularly in her father’s small apartment, where he cooks the meals. The regulars in these particularly vivacious meals, brimming with life and humor are relatives and friends. The photographs reflect a joie de vivre, and one can sense the noise and commotion. Closing: January 30, 2014

My pick: Exhibition for parents and children

This exhibition for children monitors stations of Tel Aviv in life of Gutman. To anyone who grew up on his books, illustrations and paintings. The exhibition invites children, parents and grandparents to be traveling Gutman’s world, a world of memories, thoughts, feelings and love for the place and others, and see the sights of Tel Aviv through his eyes.

The Bineth Gallery represents contemporary and modern Israeli artists. Over the years it encouraged some of the prominent Israeli artists, like Bergner, Ardon, Klapisch, Rauchwerger and Ozeri, on their way to international recognition. Run by Gabi Bineth grandson of Gershon Bineth who founded the gallery in Jerusalem in 1962, it now boasts large exhibition halls of 300 square meters in Tel Aviv.

Dvir Gallery

For over thirty years, Dvir Gallery – specializing in contemporary art – has been exhibiting, promoting and representing Israeli artists in and outside of Israel. Over two decades ago the gallery exceeded its local boundaries and began to exhibit and represent international artists. One of my absolute favorite galleries of the White City.
