Happy Gayoween! – The Queer Guide for a Perfect Celebrity Costume Party
It goes without saying that most gay parties – even the boring ones – will probably be more fun and exciting than any straight-thrown Halloween bash this year. It’s not that I’m judgmental, but we have to admit – we have a gift to throw a memorable ball everyone will enjoy! How about a celebrity costume party? The excitement of picking a costume of your favorite LGBTQ role model is totally crazy and it gets your creative juices flowing!
It’s interesting how gay culture has embraced even straight icons as gay, just because of their genuine fabulousness. With my co-blogger and fellow journalist friend, Peter Minkoff you can gay-up any (in)famous pop cultural icon. If you’ve recently received an invitation for a celebrity costume party and you’ve already used your Cher card once, here are some ideas on fancy dress costumes to choose from for your next festivity. Here we go…
Ah, the gorgeous Marilyn! It’s not a surprise that she’s on the list, is it? After all, she is one of the timeless beauties that will be known of even after we are gone. And, showing up to a party in her image will definitely turn heads! Don’t get stuck with the white dress – there are so many fabulous, legendary outfits you could pull on!
He is so adorably gay I want to hug him and kiss him on the forehead! His distinctive image is pretty awesome and going for Lambert costume may be a real success. Plus, you won’t have to be bothered to make the costume. All you need is rocker-fancy style outfit, a lot of black eyeliner and spiked hair. Oh, yeah – try to look mean, too!
An obvious choice! Our favorite Lady keeps changing looks so going for any of them will be great. However, choose something distinctive. Remember “Telephone” video? Or “Alejandro”? Or when she showed up in that meat dress? How about re-creating it in vegan version?
The queen! Only, I have to warn you the same thing I did in Gaga section – choose a distinctive period in Madonna’s creation. Maybe her pointy bra situation? There’s so much to choose from! I mean, she is a singer with more gay anthems than you can count – something should inspire you – just, don’t play a virgin and get frozen on me! Plus, you can probably find a Madonna outfit through some of the online costume offers – you’ll find anything on the internet these days!
There’s probably nothing as sweet as dressing up as adorable little Dorothy, with her rubby shoes. Judy is known as a huge gay icon because her performance of “Over the Rainbow” in “The Wizard of Oz” resonated strongly with gay audiences of the time. These were 1930s, and being gay was completely condemned. Judy for president!
Our sweet Liza! You know what they say – like mother, like daughter! Just like Garland, Minnelli is loved by gays! Going full Minnelli won’t be a difficult costume to pull. Mind your hair, get all dressed up, put on your fishnets, some dramatic make-up, and… oh well, you already know it!
Well, I hope these gave you some cool ideas. Yes, I do know I’ve drawn too much on “older” gay icons but why not – some fabulous ladies will never go out of style! If, however, you are more on a modern side – dressing up as Beyonce, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Robin, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj or any other amazing queen of today will also be a wonderful choice!
